Netgear unveils NeoTV Streaming Player, takes another shot at the smart TV market [EngadgetHD]
Last year, Netgear got involved in the connected TV device market by licensing XD devices from Roku. Now Netgear has announced a broadband-connected TV set-top all its own – the NeoTV Streaming Player.
The NeoTV Streaming Player looks amazingly similar to the Roku and offers the usual collection of streaming content, including Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, and so on. According to Netgear, the device should be available by the end of September. The hardware includes an HDMI port, WiFi radio, and an Ethernet optical audio line out, all in a small shiny black box.
Also like the Roku, the NeoTV offers a few gaming options on the devices as well, though the NeoTV does not have the motion-sensored remote (also no Angry Birds). The device does include various news and information channels as well, such as The Economist, Engadget, and TED. There are also Facebook and Twitter channels.
