Samsung, Sony, Panasonic dig in heels on active 3D with new standard [ArsTechnica]
3D television sales haven't exactly been a rousing success for television manufacturers, resulting in questions about why consumers haven't jumped on board the 3D bandwagon. Three television manufacturers are aiming to eliminate one consumer concern that may be limiting sales - the lack of a standard for 3D glasses.
Sony, Samsung and Panasonic have banded together with 3D glasses company XPAND 3D to create a universal standard for active shutter 3D glasses that all three companies will use on their 3D televisions. Currently each TV brand has its own proprietary 3D glasses technology. If a consumer needs another pair - they have to purchase it from the same company that made their TV.
The move is likely to put pressure on other companies that use proprietary active shutter or passive 3D glasses to drop those in favor of this new standard. The companies developing the 3D glasses standard expect to release it for adoption by September, with televisions and glasses that operate on the new standard available to consumers next year.
