Wal-Mart takes another crack at challenging Netflix [CNET News]
The nation's largest retailer has jumped into the online streaming market via its own web site.
Wal-Mart, which acquired the Vudu streaming video service in 2010, has launched movie rentals and purchases on the WalMart.com web site using the technology it aquired during the Vudu transaction.
Unlike Netflix, Wal-Mart's service will offer titles on an a-la-carte basis rather than via a subscription.
This news comes on the heels of two pieces of bad news for Netflix - customer outcry regarding a significant price increase resulting from the company's decision to unbundle streaming and DVD-by-mail and a less than expected increase in subscriber numbers in its latest quarterly results.
