Amazon Tries Taking the Kindle To School, Again, With Textbook Rentals [All Things D]
College students may soon be turning to Amazon's Kindle for their textbooks, with news that the company is launching a e-textbook rental service. For a significant savings over traditional textbooks, Amazon will offer "thousands" of textbook titles for rent and download on their Kindle e-book reader. These textbooks would also be downloadable on the Kindle software that runs on iOS, Android, Mac and PC.
The service would allow students to rent the books for a period between 30 and 365 days. Publishers John Wiley & Sons, Elsevier and Taylor & Francis are working with Amazon for the offerings.
Students can save their notes and highlights from the rented textbooks, which will be available to them after a textbook's rental period expires.
