Nielsen: Onlinve video viewers watch less TV [AP]
Confirming the obvious, a recent Nielsen report indicates that Americans who watch the most video online watch less traditional TV than counterparts that do not view as much online video.
Many content creators have put programs online - via outlets like Hulu and Netflix - in an attempt to reach new audiences and increase the overall awareness and viewership. Nielsen's report indicates that instead of increasing the audience, online viewing may actually be diminishing the television viewership of the programs.
The report showed that, of the 2,600 people surveyed who watched online videos within the past three months, the group that watched the most minutes per day of online video also watched the fewest number of minutes of traditional television programming.
The highest group of online viewers watched roughly 19 minutes each day, while watching just over four and a half hours of television. The group that watched the lowest amount of online video watched an average of less than 6 seconds of online video a day, but watched four hours and 50 minutes of television a day.
Nielsen cautions that this is not a cord-cutting trend as about 91 percent of survey respondents still pay for some form of TV subscription and overall TV viewing increased, albeit by only 0.2 percent over the past year. Online video viewership increased 35 percent and video viewing on mobile devices grew 20 percent.
