Web Advertising Eclipsed Newspapers in 2010 [Wall Street Journal]
For the first time, total annual ad dollars spent online surpassed that of all newspapers' ad revenue in 2010. That's according to a report by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) that was prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Last year, total web ad revenue increased by 15 percent to $26 billion. Compare that to $22.8 billion spent on advertising in newspapers.
IAB's report indicates that most growth in online advertising occured in display ads, which grew 24 percent since 2009. Search ads remained the largest share of online advertising revenue, which accounts for 46 percent of the total.
The IAB report's findings aren't that much of a surprise, since web advertising has been gaining on newspapers for several years. It's more of a confirmation, and the gap between the two is only expected to widen in coming years.
