Cablecom Achieves 1.37 Gbps On HFC Plant [Cable360.net]
I've chronicled the various tests being conducted with DOCSIS technologies to reach unbelievably high broadband speeds. These tests stretch HFC (hybrid fiber-coax) cable to new limits of internet speed.
In a window to the future, Swiss cable provider cablecom, recently was able to reach speeds as high as 1.37 Gbps through a basic HFC. The test did not do anything to alter the state of the coaxial cable itself, instead focusing on the modem and other new equipment provided by Cisco.
Again, these are merely tests. Modems that are currently in the marketplace are not equipped to handle speeds this high. Laptops, network equipment, and other devices don’t have the ability yet either. For this test, Cisco developed new technology that could achieve the high broadband speed.
But it does confirm that the HFC platform will remain competitive and robust for many years to come.
