If you support it, why does Insight, at least here in Northern Kentucky, continue to broadcast local commercials that just blast your eardrums? It would seem to me that as the CEO, you could put an immediate stop to it. The volume on these local commercials is becoming intolerable. If the intent is to get the viewer's attention, it does, but in a negative way. I am at the point now that I just hit the mute button as soon as they appear. Time to put a stop to this annoying approach to advertising.

I believe it has to do with the dynamic range compression of commercials being greater than that of most regular programming, which makes soft sounds louder. So even though the signal peaks are all normalised to -6dB or so the average signal of the commercials are higher.


Good post, Michael. The "loud commercial" complaint is near universal across the land. But having worked at numerous broadcast stations and one cable company, I have never been able to glean from any engineer why this phenomenon occurs. All tell me they set the audio levels of all signals received at the same level. They notice it, too, but couldn't explain it. (Maybe its a secret cabal, I don't know?).
What I do know is it takes the FCC three years to figure out whether one uttered profanity is actionable. It will be interesting to see how this process works when Ida May calls from Nowhere, USA to say the "Sham-Wow!" commercial is too loud.
