Mach Schnell! Germany's Kabel Deutschland Tops 1 Gbps in Field Trial [Bit Rate - Multichannel News]
DOCSIS 3.0 has now broken the 1 Gigabit-per-second speed barrier under real-life conditions. Kabel Deutschland, a German cable company with roughly 8.9 million customers, conducted a field trial to test the speed limits of DOCSIS and achieved speeds over 1 Gbps.
The test was conducted in a multi-dwelling unit in Hamburg, Germany and used a 862-MHz system to reach the ultimate speed of 1.17 Gbps. The system (a CMTS and EuroDOCSIS 3.0 broadband equipment) that achieved the speeds was provided by Cisco.
Perhaps what’s even more impressive is that in the field test, these speeds were reached while still providing over 100 digital and 32 analog channels, which Kable Deutschland currently provides to its subscribers.
It will be a few more years before any speeds this high will be commercially available to Kabel Deutschland customers. Currently their subscriber base can get speeds as high as 100 Mbps.
