Wal-Mart buying Vudu streaming movie service [EngadgetHD]
Add Walmart to the list of new entries to the competitive world of online entertainment. The mega-reatailer has announced an agreement to acquire
Vudu, a streaming video provider. Vudu has content agreements with movie studios equating to a video library of 16,000 movies, including a large selection of full HD movies. Vudu's library can be streamed from a number of HD televisions that have Vudu's software player built-in as well as some Blu-ray players and a Vudu set-top box.
Engadget views the acquisition as a hedge by Walmart against declining DVD sales, as customers turn more and more to online movie downloads, powered primarily by cable's high speed broadband network, as an alternative to physical media. Walmart, once the nation's largest seller of music on CDs, watched Apple's iTunes take over that title, and appears determined not to let the same thing happen again.
