FCC Asks Congress For Four-Week Extension Of Broadband Plan [Multichannel News]
For the past several months, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been at work on a national broadband plan. The plan had been mandated by Congress to be completed by February 17th, however the Commission is asking Congress for another month to complete it.
Representing the nation's aspirations for wider broadband availability and adoption, the national broadband plan has been the subject of a number of FCC meetings and public comments filed with the Commission. But, February 17th has turned out to be an ill-fated date for the second year in a row for federal government's efforts to achieve major technology milestones. In 2009, the FCC was set to mandate the transition of broadcast television from analog to digital on February 17th, but the deadline was moved to June because a significant percentage of Americans weren't prepared for the change.
According to Multichannel News, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has provided the other commissioners with a draft copy of the plan for review, a courtesy that would have been quite surprising under Kevin Martin.
