YouTube going 1080p, already? [EngadgetHD]
Full high definition video is coming to the world's most popular online video site, YouTube. At the NewTeeVee Live event, Hunter Walk, YouTube's director of project management, revealed that YouTube will be unveiling 1080p resolution videos in the coming days. Current videos that were recorded at 1080p will be re-encoded at the higher resolution, and new uploads at 1080p will be able to be viewed at full 1080p. YouTube's current maximum resolution for viewing is 720p.
Walk disclosed that the Google-owned site is about halfway through the re-encoding process for current videos on the site. About 10 percent of all videos now uploaded on YouTube are high definition, up from just 1 percent a year ago.
The move, which will have an impact on YouTube's video storage and bandwidth requirements, was designed to improve the quality of the videos available from premium content partners - for content like television shows and feature-length movies. But, even amateur-produced content, if recorded in 1080p, will be able to be uploaded and viewed in the new maximum resolution.
