DSL Vs. Carrier Pigeon [Broadband Reports]
Yesterday was race day in South Africa. Frustrated DSL users in the IT department at a South African company called The Unlimited decided they had enough of slow downloads over their telephone company provided DSL connection. At one point, someone joked that a carrier pigeon could transport their data faster than DSL. So, one thing led to another, and the Carrier Pigeon vs. DSL race was born.
The rules were simple, the IT department would begin a 4 GB transfer between two locations in South Africa via their DSL connection. At the same time, a carrier pigeon, equipped with a 4 GB SD memory card containing the same data, would be released to fly the same route as the data transfer. If the DSL download was completed first, it would be declared the winner. But, if the pigeon arrived before the download completed, then the pigeon would win.
And the result? As it turns out, Winston the carrier pigeon won the race, taking just over 2 hours to fly the route. In the same time, the DSL transfer was 4 percent complete. The Unlimited's IT department estimates that the DSL transfer might have been completed in 2 days' time.
Sounds like it's time for the IT department to drop the slow DSL and subscribe to cable broadband.
That is unbelievable a pigeon can beats the internet speed! Smart pigeon!
