Live blog: Countdown to Conficker [CNET News]
It may be the worst April Fool's Day joke ever, played on Internet users worldwide. Then again, it could all be a false alarm. CNET has up-to-the-minute coverage of the Conficker worm's activation, with early reports indicating that the worm is "aware" and "stirring," but has yet to take any malicious action.
The worm, which has spread quickly to infect more than 12 million computers worldwide, has the ability to disable antivirus programs and interfere with Microsoft Windows' internal security controls. In its newest variant, Conficker has the ability to be automatically updated by the malware authors that wrote the original Conficker.
If you have a concern about whether your computer is infected with Conficker, check this earlier CNET article with information about removing Conficker and patching your system to make it more difficult for Conficker to remain on your system.
