FCC May Shorten Landline Number Port Window [Broadband Reports]
Good news may be coming for telephone customers looking to save money by switching their service from the phone company to cable. Broadband Reports writes that the FCC is looking at reducing the amount of time phone companies have to port a telephone number to a new provider when a customer elects to change. Currently landline number portability is subject to a four day deadline from the time the customer requests the change. Compare that to the hours or minutes that it takes wireless providers to change a number.
The FCC appears to be looking at reducing the number port deadline for landlines to 24 hours. The change would make the market more competitive for customers seeking a better deal on phone service because the current process is often takes so long that customers aren't willing to put up with the hassle of switching service providers, even if there's a better deal to be had.
