ZeeVee takes on Boxee with Zinc (OS X) [Zatz Not Funny!]
Boxee, the open-source online video browser, has some competition. Called Zinc, it's a customized build of the Firefox web browser designed to make it easy for users to browse online video. Zinc is a product of ZeeVee, which also makes a product called the ZvBox, designed to stream Internet video to televisions.
Zinc's screen shots look a lot like Boxee, featuring content from sites like Hulu and YouTube. But unlike Boxee, Zinc's code is actually part of a web browser, which make it less likely to be blocked in the fashion that Hulu has blocked Boxee users from its content. Zinc also looks to be set for a Mac OS X release as well as a Windows release. Boxee currently only runs on Linux and Mac machines.
Though it's not been released, it will be interesting to see whether these products continue to thrive in the wake of cable operators' planned online video portals.
