Microsoft TV is About Cable Testing IP [Zatz Not Funny!]
Microsoft recently announced its Xbox TV initiative that will allow Xbox Live users watch cable television content via the Xbox console rather than a cable set-top. Most cable operators are hoping that IPTV will help to give consumers the ability to provide their own set top box instead of having to rely on a provider-supplied device. There are several content providers on board with Xbox TV, including the nation's largest - Comcast.
In order to access most of the content on Xbox TV, cable customers enter their autentication information to verify their status as a customer.
Zatz Not Funny makes a good point about the Xbox TV announcement,in that this isn't about just another service to deliver limited video content from a web portal, but it is a way for cable providers to test IPTV delivery on a limited basis.
Comcast has been testing IPTV - a Wall Street Journal article in May indicated the company was using the MIT campus as its proving ground. But, Xbox TV will allow the company to provide a similar service to customers throughout its footprint, so long as they have an Xbox console.
