Time Warner to Subsidize Subscribers’ TV Device [New York Times]
Time Warner Cable is set to provide a rebate to its DOCSIS 3.0 broadband customers on the purchase of the Slingbox set-top. The Slingbox device connects to users' televisions and broadband connection, allowing users to place-shift their television viewing experience. When a customer with a Slingbox goes on vacation, they can take their channels with them, watching them over a broadband connection at their destination.
Time Warner Cable will provide a $300 rebate to customers of what it calls Wideband Internet (it's DOCSIS 3.0 broadband product which provides a 50 Mbps connection) for the purchase of the Slingbox. At current prices, the rebate essentially makes the device free to the customer.
Slingbox streaming can be viewed on a computer, on mobile devices like the iPad and on televisions via a companion device called a Slingcatcher.
