BlackBerrys Said to Get Android Apps [Bloomberg]
Bloomberg reports that Research In Motion (RIM), the company behind Blackberry, is expecting to be able to run apps for Google's Android operating system on certain Blackberry models next year.
RIM recently announced that new models released in early 2012 will run its new operating system, named QNX. RIM hopes that QNX with help it stay relevant in the quickly evolving mobile device market. Apple and Google offer many times more apps than RIM and are widely perceived as being more current with their app selections.
One way QNX may be able to stem RIM's revelancy problem is by adding Android app compatibility. With QNX, Blackberry users will have access to the 250,000 apps on the Android Market. That's roughly six times more than RIM's App World currently offers.
The Android app player rumored to be available on RIM's smartphones is also being added to RIM's tablet offering, the PlayBook.
