Simply put, webOS just did not catch on. There seemed to be a small contingent of faithful followers who loved the operating system, but there simply weren't enough for HP to hang on to the products.
This means that the mobile OS market in the U.S. now down to four main competitors – Apple, Google, RIM, and Microsoft.
WebOS, particularly the HP TouchPad device, had been struggling with dangerously low sales. The price of the device had dropped multiple times and Best Buy recently requested that HP take back more than 250,000 devices sitting in Best Buy stores.
HP had acquired webOS just last year via the purchase of Palm. Now it faces a very uncertain future, without support from HP and questions about whether another company will step up to buy web OS.
