FCC Denies Petition To Delay Comcast/NBCU Merger Review [Multichannel News]
While it still has several hurdles to clear, the merger of cable provider Comcast and NBC Universal received one green light from the FCC this week. The Commission denied a petition from the Mabuhay Alliance that sought to delay the merger for the purpose of holding hearings on the diversity implications of the deal. The Alliance had sought to have the FCC conduct an inquiry into how the merger would affect media content diversity with regard to Asian Americans and other minorities.
The FCC's ruling on this issue is one in a larger set of considerations the Commission and other federal agencies are reviewing before the merger can take place. However, it doesn't mean NBC will be in the Comcast fold anytime soon. According to Multichannel News, the government's review of the merger still is expected to take around a year.
In response to the FCC's ruling, Multichannel also reports that Comcast is holding discussions with a number of national diversity organizations about the merger.
