Twitter to block malicious links [CNET News]
Twitter has decided to crack down on links to malicious web sites that phishing sites use in tweets to lure in unsuspecting users on the social networking web site. In a blog post, one of Twitter's co-founders explained that the Twitter will now employ link filters to determine when links are posted to a tweet are legitimate or malicious. Now, when a user posts a tweet that contains a link, filtering technology will check the link to make sure it doesn't send other users to a malicious site.
Last month, Twitter was beset with several phishing attacks that have prompted Twitter's changes in how it handles links.
According to Twitter, most phishing attacks on the site are carried out through the direct message feature where users can send each other private messages. Copies of direct messages are emailed to users. With link filtering, now if a direct message contains a link to malware, users that click on the link won't be directed to the malware.
