HDMI 1.4a spec released in full, lays down mandatory 3D format support details [EngadgetHD]
Engadget reports that the specifications for version 1.4 of HDMI have been released, and the specs mandate 3D support for HD devices that support the new version of HDMI. HDMI, or High-Definition Multimedia Interface, is a digital transfer standard for transmitting high definition video and audio. Viewers looking for the highest quality HD transmissions between their set-tops and HD televisions opt for an HDMI connection.
In order to create a compatible 3D transmission standard for consumer electronics devices, the HDMI Founders (a group of seven companies responsible for the standard) have released HDMI version 1.4.
While devices that support HDMI version 1.3 have the capacity of delivering a full 3D experience, this article indicates that audio receivers using version 1.3 might not be able to interpret 3D audio content without a workaround. Version 1.4 promises to resolve these issues so all 3D content and device work correctly to deliver an accurate 3D experience.
