Panasonic 3-D TVs Sell Out as ‘Avatar’ Technology Reaches Homes [Bloomberg News]
The first week's worth of 3-D television sales in the U.S. has resulted in one manufacturer selling out of units. Bloomberg reports that Panasonic's plasma 3-D sets sold out in their first week of sales and retailers are currently backordering the units from the company for customers. Panasonic has set a goal to sell one million 3-D televisions in 2010.
Samsung is currently the only other manufacturer with 3-D TVs currently available in the U.S., and Sony expects to begin U.S. sales of its 3-D units this summer.
While the only 3-D content options currently available to viewers are 3-D movies on Blu-ray, that will change in the coming months. I've blogged about Comcast's plans to provide coverage of the Masters in 3-D and ESPN will launch a 3-D channel this summer with the first programming to include several games of the World Cup.
