The FCC Wants You to Test Your Broadband Speeds [Wired]
Most readers of this blog have probably used a web site, like Speedtest.net, to test their downstream and upstream broadband speeds. Now, the FCC wants users to perform a similar test for the federal government and share the results. As part of the FCC's development of a national broadband strategy, Broadband.gov now has a consumer broadband test java applet.
Users who want their broadband speeds to become part of the FCC's national database of broadband speeds and availability enter their street address into the applet and run the speed test. The street addresses and associated speed results will allow the FCC to analyze broadband availability and broadband speeds in locations with broadband.
In addition to a version for wired broadband connections, Broadband.gov features a speed tester for mobile devices that tests wireless Internet speeds.
