Viacom Will Take ‘Daily Show,’ ‘Colbert’ Off Hulu [NYT - Media Decoder]
The free ride for popular Comedy Central programming is about to end over at online streaming site Hulu. Viacom, which owns Comedy Central, has decided to pull episodes of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report" from Hulu next week as Hulu's agreement to carry the shows expires. Viacom opted not to renew that agreement with Hulu.
Hulu's revenue model is based on ad sales that appear during a program's normal commercial breaks. Hulu typically only displays one ad during each commercial break rather than the number shown on traditional television. Those ad revenues are shared with programmers that have content on the site.
These two shows represent the first major break between Hulu and its content providers. "The Daily Show" was the third most viewed program on the site.
However, even though these two shows will no longer be available on Hulu, they will remain available for online watching on Comedy Central's own web site.
