Apple Says WiFi-sniffing Apps Stink [GigaOM]
Apple iPhone users that rely on third-party applications that search for available wi-fi signals won't have that option going forward after Apple removed every wi-fi searching application from its Apps Store this week. While the reason why Apple decided to remove this segment of applications isn't completely clear, the company has used a walled-garden approach to the Apps Store, submitting new applications to a rigorous testing process and removing applications it determines that aren't in line with its terms of service. Users of the iPhone cannot install third-party applications to their device unless they have passed Apple's testing process.
Developers of wi-fi searching applications received notice from Apple that their application was removed from the Apps Store.
Users made use of the now-removed applications to find nearby wi-fi hotspots to connect their iPhone to faster broadband. Even though they won't have access to third-party applications to search for wi-fi, iPhone users can still rely on a built-in wi-fi application to connect.
