Nielsen Targets TV-Plus-PC Ratings By August 2010 [Multichannel]
As online video viewing increases, Nielsen has recognized the need to develop a single tool to measure viewership of content both in the online sphere and via traditional television viewing. The company recently announced plans to move up its plans to integrate measurement of online and television video viewing. Instead of a previously planned 2011 roll-out of Internet video measurement among its People Meter households - those that it measures traditional television viewing among - Nielsen is planning to have 7,500 People Meter households equipped to measure online video viewing by August of next year.
According to this article, a major factor in Nielsen's decision to move up it's joint online/television measurement product is largely based on cable providers' move toward the development of authenticated online video content for their subscribers. Comcast recently announced that it plans to introduce its On Demand Online service to all its customers this month. Earlier this year, Nielsen met with cable industry representatives to determine how to mesh its measurement product with cable's online content distribution.
