Twitter Disrupted By Web Attack [NYT Bits Blog]
Early this morning hackers mounted a successful attack against the micro-blogging site Twitter, disabling its web site for a period of time. The hackers managed to hijack the site's domain name servers (DNS), according to a report from a Twitter co-founder. Once the hackers had control of the of the Twitter DNS, they were able to redirect web traffic to the site to a web page that declared Twitter had been hacked by a group called the "Iranian Cyber Army." Users attempting to use Twitter's web interface could only access the hijacked page.
Twitter has been the subject of several cyber attacks in 2009, ranging from several celebrities Twitter accounts being taken over by hackers posting malicious tweets to a denial of service attack aimed at a blogger over his support of the Republic of Georgia in a conflict with Russia.
Twitter has now reassumed control of their DNS and the site appears to have recovered from the most recent attack.
