Nielsen Three Screen Report: 99 percent of video still viewed on a TV [EngadgetHD]
Nielsen's latest Three Screen Report, which measures video viewing on televisions, online and via mobile devices, has been released for the third quarter of this year. While the report shows substantial growth for online viewing - up 34.9 percent over last year - 99 percent of all video viewing still occurs via the television screen.
On average, Americans watched 31 hours and 19 minutes of traditional television each week during the third quarter of 2009. Of that television viewing, Americans watched an average of a half-hour of recorded video from their DVR each week. DVR usage is up 21.1 percent over the same quarter last year. Compare that to only 22 minutes of online video viewing on the Internet and just three minutes spent watching mobile video.
Based on the demographic numbers released by Nielsen, it appears that younger Americans are marginally heaver consumers of online and mobile video than their older counterparts. Older Americans watch substantially more television - with adults between 55-64 watching nearly 40 hours of television per week compared to adults 25-34 watching less than 30 hours each week.
