Panasonic's 50-inch 1080p 3D plasma spotted, watched at CEATEC [EngadgetHD]
Want the first glimpse of 3D HDTV? Last month, I mentioned that Panasonic was debuting its 50 inch 3D HDTV at the Ceatec show in Tokyo this week. EngadgetHD has the first pictures of the new Panasonic 3D set and the active shutter glasses that create the 3D effect. The glasses synchronize individual video frames to the right or left eye, creating a three dimensional picture in 1080p. Right now, the 3D source video is coming from specially formatted Blu-ray discs.
Darren Murph at EngadgetHD indicates that the 3D set appears to have a very thin profile, but that the glasses are "annoying." Murph does say that the glasses and 3D technology performs well on the Panasonic set, saying, "the G-Force demo looked downright stunning, with depth being easily perceived and fast moving action whisking about seamlessly."
Look for other manufacturers to be rolling out 3D HDTVs of their own in the coming months, with the first sets expected to be sold next year. Studios are already at work converting 3D features onto Blu-ray discs for these first 3D sets. But I think the key to 3D in the home is making it work without the glasses.
