Microsoft Confirms Hotmail Phishing Attack [PC Magazine]
If you're a user of Microsoft's Hotmail web mail service, it's time to change your account password. This morning, Microsoft confirmed that several thousand Hotmail accounts had been compromised by hackers via a phishing scheme. The compromised accounts have been blocked by Microsoft, which is working with the account owners to restore access. Microsoft took steps to block access after the breaches were discovered to prevent hackers from obtaining access to emails that contained personal or financial information.
The account user names and passwords to the compromised Hotmail accounts were likely obtained via a phishing scheme, which attempts to fool users into revealing account information to a party they believe is trustworthy. In this case, the hackers that stole the Hotmail account information, posted the log in credentials to a web site.
All Hotmail users, and web mail users in general, should change their passwords on a regular basis to avoid being the victim of a phishing scheme. Don't reveal your log in credentials to anyone and report suspicious emails requesting this data to your web mail service provider.
