Panasonic's 50-inch 3D plasma announced, seeks fine family home [EngadgetHD]
I wrote last week about the release of three dimensional high-def televisions in the coming year, and today EngadgetHD has word of a 50 inch 3D plasma from Panasonic that will be debuting at the Cetec show in Tokyo next week. The Panasonic 3D HD set makes use of active shutter technology - which uses 3D glasses compatible with source video frames synced to the right eye or left eye to produce the 3D effect.
3D is in a very early stage right now and one can see the battlefield developing to find a winning technology. Multiple techniques using different types of glasses are commonly out there, as well as some who seek to make 3D work without the need to wear anything over your eyes. Like Beta vs. VHS and Blu - Ray vs. HD DVD, the winning technology must emerge before we can expect widespread deployment of any new 3D technology.
Here's what Panasonic says about the technology which drives their new 3D television:
This 50-inch PDP uses Panasonic's newly-developed high-speed 3D drive technology that enables rapid illumination of pixels while maintaining brightness. The panel also incorporates a crosstalk reduction technology allowing for minimizing double-image (ghosting) that occurs when left- and right-eye images are alternately displayed. PDPs have excellent video response with full moving picture resolution. The new panel offers even improved performance, achieving clear, high-quality and high-resolution images in 3D. The high-precision active shutter glasses incorporate Panasonic's technology that precisely controls the active shutters with the left- and right-eye images shown on the PDP.
The Panasonic 3D HDTV is set for release in the U.S. next year, and the company is working with movie studios to reproduce 3D movies onto Blu-ray discs that will be compatible with its 3D set.
