Evolution Wins DTA Deal With Kentucky Cabler [Multichannel News]
As the nation completed the broadcast digital transition in June, another digital transition is already underway that will allow cable operators to offer customers more advanced services like super fast DOCSIS 3.0 broadband speeds and additional high definition channels. Multichannel News reports on a cable provider in Kentucky
that's making plans to convert its entire cable system to digital in the
coming months. The Frankfort Plant Board, which provides customers in Frankfort and Franklin County, Kentucky cable, broadband and phone service has announced plans to deploy digital transport adapters (DTAs) to customers that are not yet connected with digital cable boxes.
DTAs receive and decode digital cable signals, allowing analog televisions to view digital cable channels without a digital cable box. DTAs are less expensive, but have fewer capabilities than a regular digital cable box. Digital cable channels take up less bandwidth than analog channels from the cable head end to each customer's home. Therefore, moving additional channels to digital allows cable operators to pack more services into their networks including increasing the number of channels, adding more HD channels and providing super fast broadband speeds.
According to this article, Frankfort Plant Board plans to provide DTAs to their customers so that the Plant Board can move the analog channels to digital, allowing customers to continue to receive their programming without interruption. Then, the Plant Board can move forward on upgrading their services, like adding up to 60 new HD channels, providing video on demand, and DOCSIS 3.0 cable broadband.
Here at Insight, we're working on similar plans to continue providing more advanced services to our customers. While I don't have any specifics to reveal yet, stay tuned here to be the first to know about our own upgrades that will provide more HD and faster broadband, all coming in the future.

I probably speak for most Insight customers in Kentucky when I say I am very anxious to hear about Insights plans for more HD channels. Though I am not as anxious for DOCSIS 3.0. I have seen some of the prices for monthly service that other companies are charging and it seems too high make that commitment.
