Overall time spent online remains static [CNET News]
The average American spends around 12 hours each week using the Internet, according to a recent study released by Forrester Research. And while that amount of time has increased around 117 percent since 2004, the amount of time spent online changed little between 2008 and 2009. Forrester attributes this to web users increased savviness with the medium. I might add that today's connections allow people to perform more tasks more quickly as average speeds are faster and more consistent for broadband customers. As users become more comfortable finding information, they can do it more quickly, doing more while keeping the total amount of time at the status quo.
Forrester also measured how much time Americans watched television, finding that the average American watches around 13 hours per week. That number is largely unchanged in the previous five years of research. The research compared television viewing between regular television viewers and those that watch television programming online (via portals like Hulu). According to Forrester, around 25 percent of those online watch television programming on the web. Of that 25 percent, the research didn't note any significant difference between their average television viewing time and other television viewers. Both groups watched around 13 hours each week.
