Happy Birthday, Hulu — Do We Still Need You? [NewTeeVee]
NewTeeVee has an interesting post about the one-year anniversary of the launch of Hulu.com, the long-form streaming video portal. It's only been around a year, but will this be the year that cable operators create their own streaming video portals that outpace the content and features of Hulu. Companies like Comcast and Time Warner Cable are planning their own Hulu-like sites, with plans to launch in the near future.
Hulu's still celebrating its birthday with the news that it has passed Yahoo as the number two streaming video site on the web, according to the Nielsen Video Census for the month of February. Hulu is also announcing the creation of new social networking features, allowing users to share favorite videos with their Hulu friends.
Hulu enters its second year of existience as the number one online source for (legal) viewing of television programming. But there likely will be competitors for that title before Hulu reaches its seoncd birthday. It will be interesting to see if Hulu's business model is sustainable as others begin to venture into this space.
