NTIA Gains Access To DTV Funds [Multichannel News]
If you have a request pending for a digital converter box coupon from the federal government, it will soon be in the mail. The government's coupon program had been stalled since January, when it ran out of funding due to the sheer number of coupon requests that had been received in the weeks leading up to the original February 17th digital television transition deadline. The coupon program started a waiting list for requests, which now stands at 4 million coupon requests.
The economic stimulus bill passed by Congress and signed by President Obama last month included $650 million to restart the coupon program. And now the federal agency responsible for the coupons has received the funds from the stimulus bill and can start mailing coupons again. The agency estimates that the millions on the waiting list will receive their coupons in the next three weeks.
The new digital transition deadline is June 12th, but a handful of television stations will be converting to digital broadcasting before that date.
