Comcast: Net TV Plan Supports Cable [Multichannel News]
Multichannel reveals more details about the planned 2009 launch of Comcast's online streaming video portal. Comcast is calling the streaming video portal On-Demand Online, and it will be designed to convince Comcast customers not to abandon traditional cable television for online video offerings - so-called cord cutting. In truth, cord cutting isn't a large movement, but Comcast and other cable companies are preparing their answer to the growing popularity of video portal sites like Hulu.com and TV.com, both creations of programmers.
The On-Demand Online model is designed to be additive, meaning that it will be a companion to regular cable television - something like a DVR in the cloud that provides Comcast customers their favorite programming when and where they want it. While there's not yet a definitive release date for On-Demand Online, Comcast intends to launch the site sometime this year. Other cable operators are also in talks with programmers to provide their own streaming video portals for their customers.
