Cable company Comcast has been so successful at bringing new digital phone customers into the fold, that as of the end of last year, Comcast has become the third largest phone service provider in the country. With nearly 6.5 million telephone subscribers, Comcast has passed Quest Communications and now only trails AT&T and Verizon in phone subscriber numbers.
Comcast's milestone speaks of the larger trend of phone customers switching from more expensive telephone company plans to cable companies' less expensive, feature rich phone service. Many customers have discovered the significant cost savings of digital phone when bundled with cable television and broadband. And it didn't take long for cutomers to take note of the value that cable companies phone service provides. While the telephone companies have been in the phone business for over a century now, Comcast just began offering telephone service four years ago.
