$9 Million stollen from hack [Sherman's Security Blog]
It's still an unsolved crime - an unknown number of computer hackers breach the security at RBS WorldPay, a subsidiary of one of the world's largest banks. The hackers disable RBS WorldPay security measures and steal ATM card information, which is then used in a orchestrated cash-out using ATMs around the world. The crime netted $9 million for the criminals.
The hackers only used the information from around 100 stolen ATM cards to purpetrate the crime, removing the standard ATM withdrawal limits on the cards' accounts. Equipped with the duped cards made with the stolen card information a gang of "cashers" converged on ATMs in cities ranging from Moscow to Atlanta simultaneously at just after midnight Eastern Time on November 8, 2008.
Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to contact the FBI. It seems like nearly every week brings a new story about a scam carried out by hackers involving identity and/or financial theft. It's important that companies that maintain this type of information on their network remain vigilant to the constant threat of attack.
