Sources: AT&T, Comcast likely to help RIAA foil piracy [CNET News]
Two of the nation's largest Internet service providers are reported to have joined forces with the recording industry to combat music piracy. According to CNET, cable operator Comcast and AT&T, among other ISPs, have agreed to partner with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to respond to music piracy among users on their networks. While neither company confirms their participation in the RIAA's copyright protection program, CNET calls the plan a "graduated response program."
There don't appear to be any hard-and-fast rules for the program yet, other than a take-down notice for copyright offenders and a series of stepped up responses that could result in an ISP termination of a user's account if there are enough serious copyright violations.
The program marks a new enforcement tactic of the RIAA, which recently vowed an end to the numerous copyright infringement lawsuits that had been leveled at Internet users who traded in illegally copied music.
